5/29/2023 0 Comments De Profundis by Oscar Wilde![]() While the letter is a touching cri de coeur that offers fascinating insights into Wilde's life in prison and the background and psychology of a notorious affair, its eloquence, passion, and literary excellence raise it above the level of the purely personal. Nevertheless, it is clear from this letter that Wilde deeply loved Douglas and still harbored strong feelings for him, in spite of Douglas' role in Wilde's downfall. In it, he accuses Douglas of shallowness, selfishness, greed, gross interference with his artistic efforts and other faults and wrongdoing. While in prison, he wrote De Profundis, a long and bitter letter of recrimination addressed to Douglas. ![]() As a result of his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas, Wilde was found guilty of homosexual offenses and jailed for two years. Renowned as a wit, poet, dramatist and one of the great conversationalists of his age, Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) nevertheless fell victim to the forces of repression and prudery in late Victorian England. ![]() ![]() ![]() Vielleicht braucht er nicht einmal einen Leser." - Kolja Mensing, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung Dieser durch und durch perfekte Roman braucht keinen Rezensenten. I went on to write eleven more books in that series as well as two books in a thriller series, a nonfiction how-to write book, the first in a young adult trilogy, a magical realism novel, and several true-crime inspired suspense novels, including the Edgar-nominated, Anthony-winning Unspeakable Things, and Litani, which is out October 19. It’s a romcom mystery with a very dark inspiration, which I speak about in my TEDx Talk. My first book, May Day, came out in 2006. We chat with author Jess Lourey about her latest book release, Litani, along with its inspiration and challenges, as well as writing and book recommendations! Hi, Jess! Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?įor sure! I’m a cross-genre writer, a teacher, and a native Midwesterner with the overdeveloped guilt muscle to prove it. Building upon Ryan's (1991) seminal conceptualisation of the theory in relation to literature and using the novels as case studies, possible worlds theory is used to explain the unique and destabilising stylistic effects at play in the texts, which result in a 'duplicitous point of view' and consequent disorientation for the reader. The set showcases authors and poets who sit within the Penguin Modern Classics list and have real pioneering spirit – pushing the boundaries and making people think.
